The Italians and their love for food and family gatherings is well known. A friend visiting relatives in San Francisco was invited to dinner at her Italian brother-in-law’s parents’ house. His mamma was cooking crab pasta – her specialty – for the honored guest, who had come all the way from across the globe with her little daughter.
Dear mamma had her son and daughters scouring all the supermarkets in San Francisco for fresh big crabs, which were suddenly hard to find that day. Fortunately, the children managed to find enough crabs – the right size and kind – for mamma’s dish, which was a big hit as usual and was so delicious that our friend had to ask for the recipe.
The dinner lasted late into the night as the family and their guests exchanged stories and experiences. Papa gave the guest a pair of painted porcelain covered bowls for her dressing table, and a pastel-colored porcelain switch plate (the kind you place over the light switch) with a cute little giraffe for her daughter’s bedroom back home, all of which he had crafted and painted himself, with his own hands. Back in Italy when he was much younger, he had been a master craftsman who made crystal chandeliers and porcelain dinnerware. But that’s another story.
To this day, our friend remembers the Italian family that played host to her and her little daughter on that winter night, and mamma’s quote explaining why she went to such lengths to make sure the meal would be perfect: “Mangi Bene, Ridi Spesso, Ama Molto.”
